No doubt “The Greed” want to build boring, ugly 20th century pastiche.

These great structures hould be protected to keep in place!!!

  • Ron gooding says:

You could keep the holders and create a unique public space . Within them. Seems to me that there is a lack of creative ideas and design.

  • Andy Hobson says:

Beautiful. Wee nee to keep ’em.

  • Kirk Hendry says:

Absolutely beautiful and give much character to the area.

  • Clare Barnett says:

Can anyone remember their names? Danny Baker on one of his radio shows invited listeners to name the gas holders around London.

  • Ruth R says:

These noble structures are a beautiful piece of our history, and should be kept as local objects of scenic beauty.
The ones at King’s Cross have been ruined. These are very fine, and should be preserved as splendid historical features of the local landscape.
So much of London is being erased so rapidly it is really tragic, worse than the Blitz!
Tower Hamlets Council should do its best to prevent the erasure of its own historic character… otherwise it will just end up looking like some awful generic desert of concrete in the middle of anywhere, instead of a special place of itself. There are certain landmarks that make the area special, and these gasholders are one such landmark. Please keep them!! They are special things!

Gas will be phased out in the next few decades. “20th & 21st century structures are less visually stunning to budding engineers. Keep the 19th century structures.

Please do not demolish these beautiful historic gas cylinders. It is a crime!

  • Tom Davies says:

These gas holders are a local landmark and part of the areas heritage. Please reconsider building apartments that are highly unlikely to be affordable in any case.

Why on earth would anyone want to save these massive, industrial, rusty eyesores? They are taking up huge swathes of land that could be used for housing or new businesses. I would have thought it would be considered regeneration? I’m genuinely confused! This smacks of the worst kind of nimbyism and activism for the sake of activism. No doubt many posters also complain endlessly about lack of housing stock and unaffordability in London.

What is this “history” you claim you are preserving? There’s no human struggle or political battleground around the domestic gas industry. I’m almost tempted to believe this petition is satire?

  • Geoff Sumnall says:

These gasholders are as important as domestic and industrial sculptures as the original cranes which, with commendable forethought, remain around and help define the docklands.

  • Neil says:

I guarantee the same people signing this also complain about lack of affordable housing…
